Miami is no different than anywhere else. Certain areas can be dangerous for the ill informed and ill prepared.
Below you will find some common sense tips to make your vacation safe and stress free as possible.
Know Where You Are
Do your homework. Know where you are and where you are going. Use maps, a gps, and the advice of locals you can trust.
The difference between a safe neighborhood and a not so safe neighborhood can be less than a block in distance.
Check with the help desk and they will help you plan a fun and safe day in the sun!
Fly Under the Radar
Don't flaunt the wealth. Save it for social events. In fact, leave it home. 10:00 am is the same on a Timex as it is on a Rolex.
Use traveler checks and limit the cash you carry. Keep it to small bills. If you are standing at the counter sorting through fifties and hundreds looking for a five, you just painted a big red bulls-eye on yourself.
If you do bring valuables on vacation, use the hotel safe (if it has one)!
Vehicle Safety
Whether you rent or drive your own vehicle, use common sense when parking your vehicle. Always park as close to the business or destination as possible.
Park where it is busy, and at night always park in well lit areas. Never leave anything in plain view in your car. I had my vehicle broken into for a small nylon pouch of pencils I inadvertently left on the back seat.
When returning to your vehicle, pay very close attention to your surroundings. Carry your keys in your hand and be ready to sound your alarm.
Pay particular attention to the vehicles parked next to you. Double check your vehicle to make sure no one is in the back seat.
Educate the Children
Make sure you have a plan in place if your child happens to wander off while shopping or he/she gets lost at the beach.
Make sure both you and your children know how to contact the proper authorities. Having a plan allows you to react quickly and efficiently.
Consider cell phones for everyone with preset contact numbers!
Stay Healthy
Seriously, it's hot here! Especially in the summer months. You need to drink water on a regular basis, all day long.
If you drink alcohol, you need to drink more water. Alcohol actually dehydrates you and in this climate, you can run into problems pretty quick.
Always carry a container of H2o, drink it, refill it, repeat, and you'll be good to go!
