Hiking Tips for Chekika State Park

Here you will find some hiking tips for Chekika State Park plus a little hurricane history of the park.

Chekika was thrashed by Andrew in 1992, Irene in 1999 and nailed by Wilma and Katrina in 2005.

Chekika has truly seen it's share of bad luck!

Thanks to the park service, individual volunteers, and volunteer groups, the park is again open. Open without amenities, but open.

Because of it's history, and lack of commercialism, I have to rate Chekika a 10.

Of the many times we have visited the park, we have only seen other visitors on one occasion. Sounds good, right?

Chekika has no amenities so be sure to bring all of the amenities you will need.

Always carry plenty of water, snacks, bug spray, and water. In addition bring long sleeves and pants just in case, sun block with SPF 15 or higher, and some water. Remember your sunglasses with 90% UV protection, a hat to shade your ears, nose and neck, and last but not least, water!

It's A Good Practice...
Get in the habit of a carrying a 24 hr. pack with you on all of your long and short jaunts. Basically it's everything needed (including water and snacks) for you and your group to survive for 24 hours in an emergency. With the 24 pack, you will always be good to go!

Chekika lays on the east edge of the everglades. You will have the opportunity to see some amazing wildlife as you walk the park.

Alligators, panthers, and 100 different varieties of birds call this home. Be sure to bring your camera and take your time exploring.

Remember to walk slowly and quietly, you will always see more wildlife.

“People get blinded by the marijuana issue. We don't want people planting asparagus on the land, either. This is agricultural assault on a national park, no matter what they're growing.”
- Alexandra Picavet
